Why are my formulas changing to text if I edit them in any way?

I'm having the same issue. I copy the formula from a cell where it's working fine, paste it to a new cell, edit the formula - and it automatically changes to TEXT format (formula stops working) - I have to manually change the cell back to "general" to get the formula working again. Why is this happening? It's driving me crazy.
