Whole column not selected when dragging and dropping XML

When I drag and drop xml variables on to the first cell, as seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bw-ZetSBQCU (1:19), it does not select the whole column, but only the cell i drag it on. How can I make it select the whole column?
