What is the panel to the left of the row labels?

Here's information about grouping in Excel.
Outline (group) data in a worksheet - Microsoft Support
The shortcut to end grouping is Shift+Alt+Left Arrow. The shortcut to start grouping is Shift+Alt+Right Arrow.

Thank you for reply. When I press SHIFT+ALT+LEFTARRAY I see a popup titled "Ungroup" with the "Rows" radio button selected. When I then press "OK" nothing changes, that is, the "panel" remains visible.
