What is an"absolute reference"?

I have been asked to use an absolute reference. What does that mean?

I think it is about the location of a cell - a cell addressed as $A$1 instead of just A1 - will signify it's absolute location - because when you copied formula it will assume that the location will change accordingly. unless you used $A$1 - it will always be that location.
