type suggestions excel

A few months ago, Excel had a nice new function: when typing, a list appeared with suggestions based on letters already entered and previously entered words. This was without using a list (via data validation) or use of control + arrow down.

For example previously entered:

January

February

March

April

May

June

July

With new input starting J, a suggestion immediately appeared:

January

June

July

With new input starting JU direct suggestion is limited to:

June

July

This feature stopped working a few weeks ago. I never turned anything on or off. Do you know how I can get the feature back?

I use up to date Dutch version of Excel (version 2304, build 16327.20214).

The feature you are referring to is called "Flash Fill" in Excel. It is designed to automatically fill in values based on patterns it detects in your data.

It is possible that the feature has been disabled or turned off.

You can check if it is turned on by going to the "File" tab and selecting "Options."

Then select "Advanced" from the left pane, and scroll down to the "Editing Options" section.

Make sure the "Automatically Flash Fill" option is selected.

If the option is already selected and the feature still isn't working, you can try turning it off and on again to reset it.

If that doesn't work, you can also try repairing or reinstalling Excel to see if that fixes the issue.

It's also worth noting that Flash Fill may not work in certain situations, such as when the data is too complex or when there are too many variations in the data.

In those cases, using data validation or other Excel functions may be a better option.
