Text to Column (changing delimiters)
I have a long string seperated (delimited) by tabs; but there are also commas and colons in it (that are NOT delimiters). When I use my version of Excel I can change the delimiters to make it work;...

This could be bcz of your locale setting, pls check your son & your system locale setting.
