Excel freezes when formatting cells

This may sound ridiculously simple, but try to change your default printer to PDF. I have suffered from the same problem and this helped instantly.
This worked for me too. Removed the university printer as the default (which did seem to have some error associated with it) and excel no longer crashes. Many thanks!
