Promoting fields to Sharepoint

Has anyone had luck promoting fields in Excel 2016 to SharePoint columns? I have created an Excel template in a content type, I have updated the Properties-Advanced Properties (in the backstage) to match the fields, I must be missing something. When I save, I expect the field information to update to the column.
