problem with series names in excel 2016 boxplot - shows 1 label instead of series labels

I have set up a boxplot chart in excel 2016/365. I have 18 series showing. However, it won't show the labels for these series. I know the labels are there and correct because I can get it to show the series labels in a legend, but across the bottom of the chart it shows "1" as the label for all the series combined. How do I fix this - I need the labels. Showing it in a legend is not ideal as it's harder to line up what labels goes with what box. 

I'd like to figure out how to get the boxes labeled on the x axis instead of using the legend
