Pivot table displays month and year; but not month in both columns for 2017 and 2018

I have a pivot table in Excel 2016 summarizing expenses by activity period by month and year.  I would like to sort the pivot table in calendar order, but I can't separate Jul 2017 and Jul 2018.  The column for Jul 2018 doesn't even show Jul and I can't change the active field. Instructions I found to do that don't work. I can't ungroup the field as I need to summarize all the dates under each  month. My data ranges from July 2017 through August 2018.  I need to sort by Jul 2017, Aug 2017, Sept 2017 thru Aug 2018.

      Thanks, Jan.  I believe I answered my question by doing the report with anonymised data.

      When I added the activity period field to the field list, it automatically checks quarters and years.  I unchecked quarters and then had 2 columns on the pivot table for 2017 and 2018. 

      Then I clicked the + sign by both 2017 and 2018 and presto!  My months are sorted in calendar order!
