new computer won't print area to hp 4650

I've printed excel print areas for years from my surface pro. I now have a surface book and the same print causes an error message at the same printer. I've tried to clear and reset the print area; no success. I tried saving it as a text file; same error at the printer. I know the printer is working properly because I can immediately print a report from a different source. any suggestions?
