Need help counting and listing certain text in cells

Hi 

 

I am trying to show and count how many "texts" I have in a column.   I did a while ago but for the life of me I can't remember. I know it's not a difficult formula.  

Any  help would be sooooo appreciated!

    I think you want to put =COUNTIFS($B$3:$B$43,B3) in D3 and copy down, but you have to change D3 to be a general or number formatted cell, not a text cell as it currently is.

      thanks for the quick response!  I tried that and it just counts how many of the same value are in column B. I'm trying to number the same values in column B for example. 

       

      201200     1

      201205     1

      201205     2

      201205     3

      201206     1

      201207     1 

      201207     2

      201207     3
