My Excel spreadsheet 16.67 for a Mac does not look like the ones in help guides
I am new and trying to do a sub-total of numbers in Excel, but the help guides I see say the columns are identified by letters and rows by numbers. On my Excel it identifies Column 1, 2 , 3 etc. Then online guides say to go to the File tab that is to the left of the the Home tab. On my Excel the Home tab is the first one on the far left side. When I go to the cell below a column of numbers and press Autosum I get a #SPILL! message.
From the Excel menu, select Preferences...
Click General.
Clear the check box 'Use R1C1 reference style'.

Thanks for your response but it didn’t work as described. when I clicked on Excel, then preferences then General, There were options under Settings, Personalize and Link Handling but none included the checked box you mentioned. It seems I have a different version of Excel.
- MaxCrackCopper ContributorI found it after a very frustrating search.
Excel > Preferences > Calculation, then you can uncheck the R1C1 box.
