Do you have a cloud account where you might have been storing it without realizing it? (iCloud, OneDrive or GoogleDrive or DropBox or.....)
My Excel always gives me an option to "Open Recent..."
You may end up having to take this as a teachable moment and make it a practice to know what your computer programs are doing with files when they "AutoSave" them. To just be passive about it is not a good practice. Create your own filing system, using folders for various categories either by program type (spreadsheets vs documents vs photos) or by subject matter. And if you don't have a backup system, or a cloud system--such as the ones named above--you probably should consider it.
