line break shows in Formula but doesn't appear in Value when enclosed by double quotes In Excel 365

Excel 365 v16.54 on 27 ", late 2015 Mac, running Big Sur 11.6

When I type formula 4 characters ="rr followed by alt+return followed 3 charaters ss"  ,

The formula line displays

="rr

ss"

But the value displayed in the cell is

rrss

while typing 'rralt_returnss in the formula line displays properly as the cell value

rr

ss

Is there a way to create a line break within a double quotes forumla?
