Latest Version File Save Errors when File is in .xlsb format
- Feb 20, 2024
It's frustrating to encounter file saving issues with specific formats like .xlsb in Excel. While the exact cause of your problem might require further investigation by Microsoft, here are some potential solutions and workarounds you can try:
1. Check for Conflicting Add-ins:
- Temporarily disable any add-ins you have installed in Excel. Sometimes, add-ins can interfere with file saving functionality.
- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- Select COM Add-ins from the dropdown menu and click Go.
- Uncheck any add-ins you want to disable and click OK.
- Try saving your .xlsb file again after disabling add-ins.
2. Repair Office Installation:
- This process can often resolve corrupted files or missing components within your Office installation.
- Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Find your Microsoft Office installation and right-click on it.
- Select Change and choose Online Repair. This will download and reinstall any missing or corrupted files.
- After the repair process is complete, try saving your .xlsb file again.
3. Update Office:
- Ensure you have the latest updates installed for your Office 365 subscription.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, click Update Options and choose Update Now.
- Install any available updates and see if the issue persists.
4. Report the Issue to Microsoft:
- If none of the above solutions work, consider reporting the issue to Microsoft through their official channels.
- Provide details about your specific situation, including your Office version, the steps you've taken to troubleshoot, and any error messages encountered.
- This feedback can help them identify and address the problem in future updates.
Workarounds:
- While not ideal, consider saving your work in alternative formats like .xlsx until the issue is resolved.
- Implement a regular backup routine to minimize data loss in case of unexpected file corruption.
Remember, these are general troubleshooting steps, and the specific solution might vary depending on the root cause of the issue. However, by trying these suggestions and potentially engaging with Microsoft support, you can hopefully find a way to save your .xlsb files reliably.

As for work-a-rounds I mentioned one in my post and have been changing what files I can from .xlsb to .xlsm. However, most of my files require they be in .xlsb format. Makes for easier transfer of macro enabled files and to reduce file sizes.
