Is XML in Power Query is broken on macOS

It looks like a possible Excel for Mac Power Query regression, especially if the same XML files worked before and fail on several Macs.

I would first update Excel again and test a very small/simple XML file. If it still hangs, the practical workarounds are:

  1. Import the XML in Excel for Windows.
  2. Convert the XML to CSV first, then import the CSV on Mac.
  3. Roll back Excel if you have Time Machine or an older installer.
  4. Report it via Help > Feedback with your Excel version, macOS version, and a sample XML file.

I would not assume the XML file is bad if multiple XML files hang at the connector step.
