Importing data into Excel 2016 from Access/Sharepoint database

Hello

I have an access database that has linked tables with sharepoint. I have historically linked queries to an excel spreadsheet and imported data with no problems in access and excel 2013.  

After upgrading access and excel to 2016 the the Excel spreadsheet will no longer connect and shows “connecting to database” but never does.  I noticed that I can link to standard access tables but NOT tables or queries that are linked to sharepoint. 

Not sure if this is some new security or other feature. Please advise.
