I can't figure out how to put manual page numbers in print preview

I have 4 sheets in excel. Each sheet has 2 pages.

The page numbers for pages in sheet 1 are "1/1" and "1/2"

The page numbers for pages in sheet 2 are "2/1" and "2/2"

The page numbers for pages in sheet 3 are "3/1" and "3/2"

The page numbers for pages in sheet 4 are "4/1" and "4/2"

But when printing the document, the page numbers then become successive. They go "1/1", "1/2", "2/3", "2/4", "3/5", "3/6", "4/7" and "4/8".

Why does this happen, and how can I go about it?

Which page numbering is shown depends on how many sheets you have selected to print. If you print just one, it'll show 1/2 and 2/2. If you select more than one sheet by holding down the control-key whilst clicking the sheet tabs or by clicking the first tab and shift+clicking the last tab, Excel should keep on counting and display the correct total # of pages as well.

It appears/sounds like you are trying to do something 'special'?

First off the page numbers you have appear to be custom for each sheet being it appears:

sheet 1 is formatted as 1/&[page] and then

sheet 2 is formatted as 2/&[page]  and so on

so print preview on a single sheet will show 1/1 and 1/2 for sheet 1 and 2/1 and 2/2 for sheet 2

but then when selected together and print previewed it will be 1/1, 1/2, 2/3, 2/4

So what do you want it to show/be?

If you want the numbering to restart for each page that isn't easy and not autogenerated but you can do the following cheat IF you know how many pages for each sheet.  Let's assume you have 2 pages on each sheet then you can:

      sheet 1 stays the same

      sheet 2 becomes 2/&[page]-2

      sheet 3 becomes 3/&[page]-4

      and so on

basically you CAN add or subtract a fixed number to the page numbering (unfortunately this does NOT work for total number of pages but that is for another thread)
