How to set up an Excel workbook with a password but allow 'read only' without password
We used to be able to create a Workbook spreadsheet every year for our staff rota that required a password to edit but it allowed people to view a 'read only' version without a password. This option...
Press F12 to display the Save As dialog.
Click Tools to the left of the Save button.
Select 'General Options...' from the drop-down menu.
Leave 'Password to open' blank, but enter a 'Password to modify'.
Click OK.
Enter the password again as confirmation and click OK.
From then on, the user will see a dialog when they open the workbook:
