how to move csv data into an existing spreadsheet.

I am an enthusiastic amateur with limited abilites and no training.

I have a need to pick up data from a flat csv file and import it into an existing spreadsheet and place specific bits of data into specific cells. The csv file is comma seperated text file of employees payroll numbers and hours worked in different bands. i need to bring the data into a spreadsheet that treats the hours to some extra calculations. My perfect scenario is to import the data in such way that it matches the incoming data lines from the csv file wit htheir payroll number in the spreadsheet and then puts the hours in the correct cells on their row. The next best thing is to import the data into a sheet of its own and then have excel automatically copy/move from that sheet into the next  sheets that work out hours and bonus' etc. third option is a macro to import/sort and move data. I am particularly interested in copying data into cells that have formatting rules that are not overwritten.

Does this all make sense and can anyone give me some advice/help.

cheers.

Check out this page on how to always import a CSV into a tab of your file. After having set that up, you can use formulas to exctratc the information you need from the tab with the CSV data: jhttps://jkp-ads.com/articles/importtext.asp
