how to make each excel instance independent?

using Excel version 2603 build 19822.20114

when I have multiple files open, all instances of excel are linked in that when I refresh APIs in one instance, all instances are frozen and I can't even scroll to view. Is there a way to make each instance independent to avoid this? thanks
