How to increment numbers in a column in Excel

I have a column of crate numbers. There are blank spaces between the numbers in the column. When one crate is added or removed from the middle of the list, I want all the remaining numbers to increment or decrement so the list of numbers is logical. So if I have 10 crates and remove crate 5, I want the list to renumber itself 1 to 9. Does anyone know if this is possible in Excel? The blank spaces between the numbers are not uniform.
