Set the Cell Format to Text

One of the simplest ways to get Excel to display data exactly as you type it is to change the cell format to "Text." When a cell is formatted as text, Excel won’t attempt to interpret or alter your input.

    1. Select the cells you want to format.
    2. Go to the Home tab.
    3. In the Number group, click on the dropdown menu that might say "General" or another format type.
    4. Select Text.

After setting the cells to text, Excel will display any input as you type it, without converting it to a date or decimal number.

    Or…

    Use a Custom Number Format

If you have a specific format that you want Excel to apply automatically (for example, always showing two decimal places), you can create a custom number format.

    1. Select the cells where you want this format applied.
    2. Right-click and choose Format Cells.
    3. In the Format Cells dialog, go to the Number tab.
    4. Select Custom from the category list.
    5. In the Type box, enter your desired format, such as:
      • For dates like 04.11.2024, type dd.mm.yyyy.
      • For numbers with one decimal place, type 0.0.

    Or…

Enter an Apostrophe Before Your Input

If you only need a few entries to stay exactly as you type, you can type an apostrophe (') before your input. The apostrophe will tell Excel to treat the entry as text.

    • Type 04.11.2024 as '04.11.2024, or 3692.1 as '3692.1.
    • The apostrophe won’t display in the cell, but it prevents Excel from reformatting your input.
