Highlight current row / column

How do you highlight the current row/column?

I found this https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/vba/excel/Concepts/Cells-and-Ranges/highlight-the-active-cell-row-or-column but it wipes out formatting, and disables ctrl-z!!!  Without even a warning..

There must be some way to simply highlight the whole row/column, just as the current cell.
