Gmail attachment
I receive an attachment that the sender said it is Excel format. When I receive it, it is in Google Sheets format. How do I get to open the attachment in Excel?

It is possible that Gmail automatically converts Excel files to Google Sheets, especially if the sender shares the file via Google Drive or if Gmail recognizes it as a Google Sheets-compatible format.
If you receive an Excel file attachment in Gmail and find that it opens in Google Sheets, you can try the following steps:
- Check Google Drive Connection:
- The sender might have shared the file directly from Google Drive. Check the attachment and see if it links directly to Google Drive.
- Check File Format:
- Look at the file extension. An Excel file typically has the extension ".xlsx" or ".xls". If the file has the extension ".gsheet" or ".gxls", it's in Google Sheets format.
- Open Directly in Google Sheets:
- Click on the file in Gmail and allow it to open in Google Sheets. Check if the URL points to "docs.google.com," indicating that the file was originally created in Google Sheets.
- Download Google Drive Version:
- Open the file in Google Drive and then choose "Download." Select the Excel format (e.g., ".xlsx") and save the file to your computer.
If the sender shared the file directly from Google Sheets or if the file was originally created in Google Sheets, that could explain the automatic conversion. In such cases, you may want to contact the sender and ask for a direct Excel version of the file.
When you receive an email attachment in Google Sheets format and you want to open it in Excel, you have a few options:
- Download as Excel:
- Open the email with the attachment in Gmail.
- Open the attached Google Sheets file in Google Sheets.
- Inside Google Sheets, go to "File" in the top-left corner.
- Select "Download" and choose the "Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)" format.
- Save the file to your computer.
- Now, you should be able to open the downloaded Excel file using Microsoft Excel.
- Convert in Google Sheets:
- Open the Google Sheets file in Google Sheets.
- Click on "File" in the top-left corner.
- Select "Download" and choose "Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)" as the format.
- Save the file to your computer.
- Open the downloaded Excel file using Microsoft Excel.
- Use Google Drive:
- If the sender shared the Google Sheets file via Google Drive, you can open the file in Google Drive.
- Inside Google Drive, right-click on the file and select "Open with" > "Microsoft Excel."
- This will open the file in Excel, and you can then save it to your local computer if needed.
- Upload to OneDrive or SharePoint:
- If you have access to Microsoft OneDrive or SharePoint, you can upload the Google Sheets file to your OneDrive or SharePoint.
- Once uploaded, open the file using Excel Online or download it to open with the desktop version of Microsoft Excel.
Choose the method that best fits your workflow and the tools you have available. Keep in mind that when you convert a file from Google Sheets to Excel format, some features or formatting may be adjusted, so it's a good practice to review the document to ensure everything is as expected after the conversion.
