It is similar to having a row for each chore in the house, with vertical entries for each child. I would X any completed chore, and am trying to get an automatic total at the bottom for how many 'X's each child has.

So the names are in the first row?

Detlef_Lewin That works, THANK YOU!! Is there a way to program in for multiple columns in the same total? I tried =COUNTA(c3..c48)+(J3..J48)+(Q3..Q48) but just got an error message.

So, it is not counting for each child but counting for multiple children?
Since it is a secret what is in the other column I will give the long way:=COUNTA(C3:c48)+COUNTA(J3:J48)+COUNTA(Q3:Q48)

The different columns are for different weapon classes. I figured the kid/chore analogy would be easier to visualize. I will try the one you just set, thank you again.
