full functions and header footer excel office 365
Trying to edit a large excel document recently transferred from a desktop application to office 365. I no longer have the desktop licence but want to edit the excel. I cannot get the full document header/footer. Any suggestions as to how I can do this?

Thank you for the response to my query.
I cannot get the header footer tab to appear in the insert tab section as suggested. It just isn't there.
Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? I don't have access to a desktop version other than with a 7 day trial which will not assist me.
Excel for Web has limited functionality compare to desktop version, in particular it doesn't work with headers and footers. If you search for the header in Excel for web it forwards you to desktop app.

- ChrisWattCopper ContributorSergei, this makes the most sense as the instructions offered previously did nothing. Thanks for your time, I will just have to do this another way. Cheers.

Editing headers and footers in Excel Office 365 online is limited compared to the desktop application. However, you can still manage and edit them, but with some restrictions. Here are the steps and suggestions to handle header/footer editing in Office 365:
Editing Headers and Footers in Excel Office 365
- Open the Document:
- Log in to your Office 365 account and open Excel online.
- Open the Excel document you want to edit.
- Accessing Header and Footer:
- Go to the Insert tab.
- Click on Header & Footer. This will switch the view to Page Layout view and allow you to edit headers and footers.
- Editing Headers and Footers:
- You will see placeholders like &[Page], &[Pages], &[Date], etc., in the header and footer sections.
- Click in the header or footer section to start editing. You can add text or use the placeholders provided.
- Limitations and Workarounds:
- Excel online does not support all the header/footer features available in the desktop version, such as custom images or complex formatting.
- For more advanced editing, you can download the document, edit it in a desktop version of Excel if available on another computer, and then re-upload it.
Alternative Solutions
- Using Excel Mobile Apps:
- If you have access to a smartphone or tablet, you can download the Excel app (available for iOS and Android). The mobile app provides more comprehensive features for editing headers and footers compared to the web version.
- Use Office Desktop Trial or Free Alternatives:
- You can download a trial version of Office 365 desktop applications if you only need to make these changes temporarily.
- Alternatively, use free office suites like LibreOffice or WPS Office, which might offer better support for advanced Excel features.
Detailed Steps to Access and Edit Headers and Footers in Excel Online:
- Open your Excel workbook in Excel Online.
- Go to the "Insert" Tab:
- Click on the Insert tab in the ribbon.
- Select Header & Footer:
- Click on the Text group, then choose Header & Footer.
- Edit the Header/Footer:
- The workbook will switch to Page Layout view, and you'll see the header and footer sections.
- Click on the header or footer to add or edit text.
- Use the options available to insert page numbers, dates, or custom text.
- Save and Exit:
- After editing, click anywhere outside the header/footer area to exit.
- Your changes are saved automatically in Office 365.
Additional Tips
- View Settings: Ensure you are in the Page Layout view to see headers and footers correctly. You can switch views using the View tab.
- Compatibility: Check for compatibility issues if the document was heavily customized in the desktop version. Some features might not be fully supported online.
- Collaborate: If you are collaborating with someone who has access to the desktop version, they can make the necessary header/footer changes for you.
By following these steps, you should be able to manage and edit the header and footer sections in your Excel workbook using Office 365, even with the limitations of the online platform. Otherwise, if you need advanced Excel functions in the long term, I recommend getting a license. They aren't that expensive
