Formula

I have a formula like this in a simple spreadsheet that adds a task mark and a test mark:

=+E14+C14.

The difficulty is that in this range is a "a" for a learner that were absent for a test but the task was done.

How can I change this formula so that the "a" will be accommodated but not added or counted and just one of the marks will be added to the value?
