formatting cells

I just bought a new personal laptop and a copy of Office 2021.  I'm running Windows 11.  I've used Excel for years, but suddenly now I can get the formatting function to work.  It doesn't seem to matter whether I highlight a whole column, a range of cells, or one individual cell.  When I go into the format function  and select, in this case, "Accounting", nothihng happens.  the format doesn't change, and the number of decimal places stays the same, as well.  Any ideas??  Is there some little trick I'm missing?  Did the last software update make this work differently?

A few further questions here to help diagnose:

    • Have you tried other formatting options for the numbers -- dates, percentages, fractions, etc -- and if so do those also not work?
    • Are you going in to the Format feature via the Home Tool Bar or the Format menu at the top?
    • Have you tried re-booting?
    • What else have you tried?

Is there some little trick I'm missing?  Did the last software update make this work differently?

I'm on a Mac, so can't speak specifically to your Windows situation, but so far as I know, what you're experiencing has not been reported by others.
