For Insider, When Will Python in Excel & New GROUPBY & PIVOTBY Functions Appear?
- Nov 23, 2023
Steve1330 , you are welcome.
As a comment, Beta is stable enough, serious issues here are very seldom. The main problem is compatibility if you share files with someone else or work in different environments.
OK, thanks, that was my concern once I read the risk associated with Beta vs Current Channel (Preview). I'll go ahead now and give Beta a chance. Thanks again.
2312 Build 16.0.17116.20002) 64-bit
Is there something else I need to do? Reboot my PC?

I just had the same problem.
Firstly, Windows Beta Channel (Windows Insider Program) is not the same as Microsoft 365 Insider Program. What you need is to join the Microsoft 365 Insider Program.
Now, normally you would do this via the Excel account tab, as you have tried. Depending on your Office version and/or setting on Windows, this is not always possible, or rather the option is not available. The official way to get this option, via the group-policy editor, is described here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/DeployOffice/insider/deploy/group-policyHowever, for me this did not work since I did not even have any policy to edit for my Office installation. I don't know why, but I suspect that I cleaned everything when I earlier uninstalled an old Office installation and ran a cleanup of the registry.
Now, to my solution, the brute force option. Just add this reg-value to your registry:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0] [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\common] "insiderslabbehavior"=dword:00000001
Restart your Excel and the option to join the Microsoft 365 Insider Program should now be visible in the Excel account tab. Remember to choose the "Beta channel" in order to get the latest features. Just remember, as mentioned in other post here, all the functions from the beta channel might not instantly be available.
Hope this helps.

Steve1330 thank you for pointing that out. Probably that's the reason. When you switch back to the Current Channel (Preview) do you still have the Python formula available? Thanks!

FYI, despite your assurances, changing to the Beta Channel started causing repeated recent crashing and corrupting of my primary Excel files, none of which had ever crashed previously. I switched back to Current Channel (Preview) late last night and have not had a single such Excel issue today. I appreciate your good intentions, but please stop encouraging such changes unless you know it will absolutely not cause such crash events. Thanks.
Steve - Steve1330Dec 10, 2023Brass ContributorItalo, you've got the "Apps for enterprise" version, that's different than I have. Maybe Sergei can help you. Sorry.

Steve1330 how did you update your version because as of now I have the Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2311 Build 16.0.17029.20028) you had. When I click on update it says I'm up to date
Also I checked my Windows Settings and I am in the Beta Channel, but this option doesn't show in the Excel account tab
I am trying to get the Python formula enabled in my laptop, but it doesn't seem to work, what would you recommend? Thank you!

May take a bit longer. I'm fully updated on the Beta channel, and I don't have the functions yet.
I recall when Python was announced, it took two weeks for the functionality to appear in my Excel.
I'm really looking forward to putting these functions through the paces to see what they can handle!

Yes, GROUPBY and PIVOTBY cover not all Beta users, they are deployed by waves. That's only to wait.
- Steve1330Nov 23, 2023Brass ContributorNow the new Python in Excel is appearing, but no GROUPBY or PIVOTBY functions. I guess those will be coming in the next few weeks as you noted above. All good for now. Thanks again.
