Is it possible for you to post a copy of the workbook in question?
Your description is both specific and vague--so without seeing what you're working with, one can only guess.
For example:
- Is it possible that your "numbers" have the appearance of numbers but are, in fact, text?
- What's the connection (if any) between the "descriptive analysis" that you mention and the lack of count?
