Fill question

Is there a simple way to copy the account number in column A into each blank cell below - stopping where the next account number is listed. I need the data in cell A2 to fill cells A3 and A4, then the data in cell A8 to fill cells A9 and A10. The number of rows to fill isn't consistently 2. It could be 1; it could be more than 3. It seems that this should be easy but I'm flumoxed.

Might I be so bold as to suggest that what you appear to have is a poor design to begin with, so it might be a mistake to do more to extend that poor design.

It's hard to be sure, but you might be making a common mistake here, trying to do on one sheet, in one area of that one sheet, three essentially different parts of data processing:

    • Input
    • Calculation or processing
    • Output

So before you go any further, would you be willing to put this all into the bigger picture, perhaps even (since you have made-up names in your sample) share the workbook and let us see the full context and make suggestions. At the same time, describe the overall purpose for collecting this data in the first place. Is this aimed at creating bills or invoices? Tracking payments against those bills/invoices? etc.

Post a copy of that workbook here at the bottom of a message box.  Here's what you should see if/when you reply here with the full edit feature, and you can drag or drop here.

Or put it on OneDrive or GoogleDrive and paste a link here that grants access.

I agree but I can only work with the data that is provided to me. Luckily, a peer has provided a solution. For anyone with similar crappy data, highlight all blanks in the column, then press “=” and press “up” key, then hold cntrl and press enter.
