Please be so kind and inform me, how you got the name of the product Excel. Maybe it means Excellent or maybe Ex Cell (out of the cell) or maybe something else?

May 11, 2018Thank you for this comment, you reinforce my opinion that it derives from Latin excellere. Even Multiplan was a wow and Excel is even better. But maybe you have a hint vor me. Do you think that it is possible to ask this question to microsoft? They have no electronic contact-address and the support sites are only for these topics, that I do not need. Thank you.

Here are the versions https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-origin-of-the-name-of-Microsoft-Excel
It was announced https://books.google.ru/books?id=2i4EAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA17&dq=excel+why+called+excel+1985&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwit9IedrYDbAhVqSZoKHaUnC2YQ6AEIUzAH#v=onepage&q=excel%20why%20called%20excel%201985&f=false really as excelled over Lotus 1-2-3, perhaps that's one of the reasons for the name.

You may ask the founder Bill Gates, he definitely knows the story about this name.
But I don't know how to contact him!
By the way, I found this https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-origin-of-the-name-of-Microsoft-Excel that talks about the same topic.

This bears also a small criticism of Microsoft in it, really the people from Microsoft are not easy to contact, if it is not specifically targeted to a technical or commercial issue.
