Excel troubles

I am typing columns of numbers to add up with the SUM function after said entries. When I go back to change the number: e.g.:  from ''0'' to ''10'', a month appears next to the number now showing ''10-Jan''. I cannot get rid of the months to leave only the decimal. Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?
