Excel Sorting Options Not Functioning Correctly on Windows 11 (Version 2406)
Hello,
I have noticed that the "Sort Smallest to Largest" and "Sort Largest to Smallest" options are not working in Excel. When I try to use these options to sort my data, I do not get the expected results.
Details:
- Excel version: Version 2406
- Operating System: Windows 11
- Type of data I want to sort: Numbers
Steps I have tried:
- Reinstalled Excel
- Tried with another file
- Attempted to repair Excel
- All attempts were unsuccessful
I would appreciate your help in understanding the cause of this issue and finding a solution. Alternatively, could I try this in another Excel file?
Thank you.
To perform a factory reset of Microsoft Excel, there are several issues to consider. One of the main issues is system-wide synchronization, which means that even if you delete and reinstall the program, the previous changes will be automatically re-applied.
To resolve this, you need to locate and erase the connected data in the Windows registry files before reinstalling Excel. This way, you can start clean again.
Here’s how you can do it:
- Using Windows Registry Editor:
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box.
- Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\ and delete the relevant Excel registry keys.
- Using Command Prompt:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Use the following commands to delete Excel registry keys:shellreg delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\ /f reg delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\ /f
Note: Before making any changes to the registry, it is highly recommended to back up your registry files to prevent any potential data loss.
After deleting the registry keys, reinstall Excel. This will allow you to start fresh.
I hope my brief explanation helps :))

Are you sure all values are numbers? You may check using conditional formatting
here 77 is the text. Please note, applying number format won't convert text to number.
That will be great if you share sample file or at least screenshot to illustrate an issue.
