Hi Jess,
Adding to Andreas's point about tables: the exact message Excel shows usually points to the cause. The common ones when the sheet isn't protected:
1. "Microsoft Excel can't insert new cells because it would push non-empty cells off the end of the worksheet." Something sits in the very last column (XFD) or last row (1048576), often formatting or a stray value applied to whole rows or columns. Press Ctrl+End to see where Excel thinks your data ends. If that's far past your real data, select the empty columns from just right of your data to the end (click the first empty column header, then Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow), right-click > Delete, do the same for the empty rows below your data, then save and reopen.
2. "Cannot shift objects off sheet." Comments, notes or shapes would be pushed off the sheet, usually because objects are set to hidden. Go to File > Options > Advanced, scroll to Display options for this workbook, and set For objects, show to All.
3. "You can't change part of an array." The column you're inserting cuts through an older array formula (one entered with Ctrl+Shift+Enter). Edit or clear that formula first.
4. Insert and Delete are greyed out with no message. Excel may still be in cell edit mode (press Esc), the file may be open read-only or in Protected View (look for the yellow bar at the top), or several sheets may be grouped with a table on one of them (the title bar shows Group; right-click a sheet tab > Ungroup Sheets).
If none of these match, post the exact wording of the message and whether it happens on every sheet or just one.

Hi Jess,
In most cases, there is a table within a worksheet. If you select a column or row that intersects this table, Excel will not allow you to insert or delete a column or row, as doing so would also affect the table itself.
See:
