Excel only sorts half of the columns
Hi!
I am working on a excel sheet where i register active client cases. The first column is the date on which the client was referred. The sheet has 10 columns. When I sort by date only the 5 first columns are sorted, and the rest end up being out of sync with first 5 columns.
How can I fix this? 🙂

It sounds like you are experiencing an issue where only some columns are being sorted when you sort by date in Excel. This could be due to several reasons. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
- Check the Range: Make sure that when you select the range to sort, you are including all the columns that you want to be sorted. Sometimes, users may inadvertently select only a portion of the data range, which would result in only those columns being sorted.
- Check for Merged Cells: Merged cells can sometimes cause issues with sorting. Ensure that there are no merged cells within the range you are sorting. Merged cells can disrupt the sorting order.
- Verify Data Types: Ensure that all cells in the date column contain valid date values. If there are any text values or blank cells mixed in with the dates, Excel may not sort the data correctly.
- Check for Filters: If filters are applied to your data, make sure that you clear them before sorting. Filters can restrict the range of data that is sorted.
- Sort Entire Sheet: Instead of selecting a specific range, try sorting the entire sheet. Click on any cell within your data range, then go to the "Data" tab in the Excel ribbon, and click on "Sort". Make sure that "Expand the selection" is selected in the Sort Options dialog box.
- Use Custom Sort: If the standard sorting method is not working as expected, you can try using a custom sort. Go to the "Data" tab, click on "Sort", and then choose "Custom Sort". In the Sort dialog box, you can specify multiple levels of sorting criteria to ensure that all columns are sorted correctly.
- Check for Hidden Rows or Columns: Hidden rows or columns may also affect the sorting order. Unhide any hidden rows or columns before sorting.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with sorting only half of the columns in your Excel sheet. If the problem persists, please provide more details, “how I provide more Details”. The text was revised with the AI.
