Excel Online - Copy and Paste
- Dec 15, 2023
It seems like you are encountering an issue with Excel Online automatically converting email addresses into mailto links and placing the URL in the adjacent cell. While Excel Online can be configured to recognize certain patterns like email addresses and URLs, this behavior may not always be desired. Unfortunately, Excel Online does not have as many options and settings as the desktop version for controlling these automatic conversions…so far I know
.Here are some suggestions you can try:
- Paste Special - Values:
- After pasting the email address, use the "Paste Special" feature and select "Values" to paste only the text without any formatting.
- Format as Text:
- Before entering or pasting the email address, format the cell as text. This can sometimes prevent Excel Online from automatically converting the entry into a hyperlink.
- Clear Formatting:
- After entering or pasting the email address, select the cell, right-click, and choose "Clear Formatting" to remove any unwanted hyperlink formatting.
- Use Excel Desktop Application:
- If you have access to the Excel desktop application, consider using it for tasks where you need more control over formatting and behavior.
- Check for Updates:
- Periodically check for updates to Excel Online. Microsoft may introduce new features or settings that provide more control over automatic conversions.
Remember that Microsoft regularly updates its online applications, and the availability of features can change. If the problem persists, checking the most recent documentation or support resources provided by Microsoft might offer more insights. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
