Thanks for the reply.
I tried to put the link in but I'm not sure it worked. It includes a sample of the spreadsheet, and you need to scroll down to where the formulas are. You see them by the cells that contain zeroes.

If you already have any formula in the cell and start typing new one from =, Excel takes the length of the existing formula and reserve the space to the right for the in-cell editing highlighting adjusted cells. Not sure if it's possible to change such behaviour.
