Excel file linking issues - Excel retaining memory of files after closure

If it happens again, check Task manager, Details tab to see if there is a perhaps hidden instance of Excel.exe dangling around.

    If I see Excel.exe in the task manager, am I to force quit the application?

      Only if there are no visible Excel windows.
