Excel Cross Cursor
It sounds like you're referring to the "White Crosshair Cursor" in Excel. This cursor appears when you're in the middle of selecting cells or ranges. Here's how you can get rid of it:
- Click Away: Simply click anywhere outside of the range you're selecting. This action should cancel the selection process and make the crosshair cursor disappear.
- Press Escape (Esc) Key: Pressing the Esc key on your keyboard can also cancel the cell selection process and remove the crosshair cursor.

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I want to firstly thank you, so much, for bothering to help me. However, none of the steps you suggested have worked. It doesn't really matter though because it hasn't stopped me from working with the spreadsheet. At first, I thought it had, but something else was going on. At any rate, I'm living with this fat white cross instead of a normal cursor and other than weirding me out from a religious standpoint, I'm good.
EXCEL for Mac
I have a similar but more difficult to fix. Went through many suggestions through the community and still no resolution.
The crosshair shows "as if" data validation is turned on, which it is not. When I open a new spreadsheet it shows the crosshair in both directions in green highlight. No matter what spreadsheet or what cell the cursor is in the cross hairs goes in vertical and horizontal direction.
I have uninstalled; reinstalled; rebooted the MAC - OS Sonoma 14.7.2

turn off the focus cell in the view settings. I'm not sure how mine got turned on but was able to find this w/ the help of chat gpt.
