Excel convert text to year
- Jan 25, 2022Thanks. Let me digest it for a day or two. It looks like excel has changed since the last version I used, that was from early 2000s. Thanks again
Mike_Kova Why would you want to convert the first column to "year". It's just going to be an axis label, unless you have something else in mind. Attached a file with the data you referred to and a simple line chart for the average yearly temperatures. The years are on the horizontal axis, based on the first column in the data tab.
Riny_van_Eekelen Thank you so much for replying. I have tried to plot the graph but for whatever reason could not get it right. Would you please describe how you got the plot. Thank you so much in advance

Mike_Kova Perhaps easier to see when you move the chart into the Data sheet. Then select the chart and you'll see the ranges that selected for the line and axis labels. In the example, I took N2:N364 for the line and A2:A364 for the axis labels.
- Mike_KovaJan 25, 2022Copper ContributorThat far I know. I highlighted on columns, CNTR -key, moved to the to the other one, highlighted that one. But afterwards, I clicked Insert and pick a graph from the options given and got some nonsense.

Mike_Kova Okay. Start by just selecting the data for the line. In my example N2:N364. Now on the Insert ribbon select the type of chart, say a line. That should instantly produce this:
Now click on the axis and in the Chart Design ribbon, Select Data.
Press edit in the right-hand window for the horizontal axis labels and enter :
=Data!$A$2:$A$364 or just select the range with the mouse.
OK.
The rest is formatting.
