Excel AutoRecover files disappeared

Hey everyone,

I have a Microsoft Surface Book 3 that I use for work.  I last used it Friday or Saturday to work on some excel estimating spreadsheets.  When I went to open it this morning it would not get past the unlock screen no matter how many times I tried.  I eventually resorted to holding the power button to force a shut down.

Upon restarting the computer, all my windows I had open were closed.  When I reopened excel the auto recover column popped up with the 3 files I previously had open.  There were 5 options to choose from as two of the files were represented as the original document and the auto recovered version.  I began opening my files and after I clicked on one, two of the options vanished right in front of my eyes.  Unfortunately the two options that vanished ended up being the original version and the auto recovered version of the most important file.  I had customer service remotely control my computer but even they couldn't find anything other that the original version which was missing hours of work that I had done since creating it.

Do you have any advice on where/how to find the auto recovered version?

Thanks,

Mikey

  • MikeyAtkins -The default location for the auto saved files is "C:\Users\Your Machine name(Mikey.Atkins something like this)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\. Please check this location.

Also, you can check excel options and confirm if the auto saved location is not different from one which is pasted above.

If nothing is in that location, you could try "Undelete" software and see if it is able to restore anything. Mind you, the more you've done with the system, the least chance you have on retrieving anything.

You can find saved autorecover documents by going to Windows Explorer and typing:
    %appdata%\Microsoft\Excel\
and pressing Enter. Alternatively, look in Excel's File, Options, Save tab for the autorecovery location.
