Excel Autoformat to date problem again

Hello, I typed Sep5 (Gene name) in Excel, it automatically change to date Sep-05. Then I change the cell format to text, but it changed to 38596. How to stop the auto date format or change the date back to what I typed correctly?

    First set the cell format to text, then type the values. If you do it the other way around you will have to re-enter the information.
