Excel 365 Not Displaying Cell Notes

I have an Excel file with cell notes (i.e., the "old" notes, not comments).  When I hover over the note to display it, I just get a solid horizontal line.  There are no rows/columns hidden.  I try to edit the note and it will not work.  Any ideas?

    This is actually strange

    You can open another Excel workbook and add a Note to see how it will be displayed

      Abiola1If I add a note to the existing file, it works fine.  The issue only happens with notes that are already there (which, about a month ago, were displayed fine).
