Excel 2021 Dark Mode Not Working – "Switch Mode" Button Unresponsive
Hello,
I’m using Microsoft Excel 2021 (Version 2504 Build 16.0.18730.20122) 64-bit on Windows, and the Dark Mode feature is not working despite multiple fixes. Here’s what’s happening:
- The "Switch Mode" button (under the View tab) does nothing when clicked.
- Excel’s UI theme is set to Black (via File > Account), and Windows is in Dark Mode.
- Cells remain white—no dark grid or true dark mode applies.
Troubleshooting steps I’ve tried:
- Updated Office to the latest version.
- Manually set the registry key UI Theme to 3 (Black) under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common.
- Repaired Office installation via Control Panel.
- Disabled add-ins and reset Excel settings.
Question:
- Is this a known bug in Excel 2021?
- Are there additional registry tweaks or workarounds to force dark mode for cells?
Thank you for your help!

Did you enable High Contrast Mode? Some people report similar issue under High Contrast Mode
