Dollar signs in all my sums

Why do I have a $ in every sum formula I create? How do I choose whether or not I have a dollar sign on the sum formulas I create?

A reference such as $A$1 or $A$1:$A$5 means that the reference is absolute, i.e. fixed: it won't change if you copy the cell with the formula to another cell, or fill down/to the right.

A reference such as A1 or A1:A5 is relative: it will change if you copy the cell with the formula or fill down/to the right.

It is also possible to have mixed references: in A$1 the column letter A can change but the row number 1 is fixed.

When you select a reference in a formula, the function F4 cycles between all combinations of absolute and relative references.
