Data validation lists

I am using data validation to select cutomers via drop down list from a "customers" table. I would like to be able to add a new customer by typing in the name in the drop down list dialogue instead of going to the table to make a separate entry (that's what happens when I use AirTable, the option to add the item shows up when I start typing). Can it be done?
