Does this happen in ALL workbooks?
Yes all spreadsheets.
Then with no input from me and not as a result of rebooting (which I did) it suddenly worked correctly again. So this has happened 3 times in the last 7 days with no apparent reason why it happens and then why it suddenly clears up the next time I load Excel.
